Water. This is the only beverage I drink during the week to stay hydrated and keep my energy levels up. I do not drink beer, vodka or anything closely related to that because it screams empty calories and will only give me a gut in the long run. Likewise, I can usually fill up on more food when I am just consuming water versus a bloody mary or cocktail. When the weekend hits, I then opt for a sugary option like lemonade, an arnold palmer, cream soda or ginger beer, but that is only like once or twice throughout an entire week. I have experimented with some wines, but even that is like once every three months or so. Plus, alcohol is expensive, and I rather spend my money on food.
The food I eat is typically plant-based when I do go out. When I ate out during my initial and middle stages of my food blog, I was eating fried chicken, hamburgers, ribs, beef etc. Let's be clear, it was amazing, but I also felt terrible afterwards. Now when I eat out, any food that might be fried is either falafel, some type of fish or french fries, and everything else is plant-based and is most likely not fried. (soy chorizo burger, black bean burgers, tofu etc.) There also is not tons of salt on items I purchase, but instead are filled with unique spices that spruce up anything I eat.
Transportation. I get around Milwaukee via public transportation, Bublr bikes, and other ride-sharing programs. While the latter option is one most people opt for when they go out with friends to a game, using public transportation forces me to walk to bus stops and exercise to get where I need to go. I'd like to believe that this helps when I do eat out during the week and it is somewhat unhealthy. Luckily, I live extremely close to where I work so walking and biking are very easy to do, but for those who may live far from where they work, find a few hours a week to bike, walk or go for a light jog. It does wonders and does not have to be anything close to Shawn T's workouts. Finding alternative ways to get up and go is one of my best kept secrets. I'll also run every so often just to check in with my body's internal health meter and to ensure I am still in somewhat decent shape.
I rarely eat out during the week. Most of my food excursions are done on the weekends and do not seep into my week. If I do eat out Monday-Thursday it will be once a week, but I cook my own meals the rest the week. I'm counting Friday as part of the weekend, and typically will opt to eat out that Friday night to celebrate another work week in the books. Although I sometimes do think I spend an exorbitant amount of money on food, I sometimes remind myself that I do not spend money at restaurants much during the week and can splurge little. Likewise, I know what foods and ingredients are going into my body and do not have to worry about added salt, sugar and fats that sometimes accompany food when dining out. Overall, these factors give me a chance eat good while staying trim, and I hope this provides more insight into my lifestyle as a foodie. Peace and grub!
