As the summer continues to move along, I've found myself eating an immense amount of barbecue. The 4th of July, Red Rock Saloon and family gatherings have given me a chance to indulge in one of my favorite types of cuisine, and this past weekend seemed like an opportune time to visit Ashley's Que, located on 124 National Ave, just on the outskirts of downtown Milwaukee.
There were a plethora of people who told me how good Ashley's Que was, but talk is cheap so I decided to gorge on rib tips and fried chicken myself. If there's one appetizer you need to get at Ashley's Que, it is the Ashley Fry. This option includes french fries topped with pulled pork that is submerged in barbecue sauce, melted cheddar cheese and peppers. This culmination of ingredients was so good my family and I ordered two baskets of this tantalizing appetizer! Unless you are a savage though, I wouldn't recommend ordering two baskets.
The entrees are all reasonably priced, ranging from $8 for sandwiches to $14 for a half & half dinner combo that includes two meats, two sides and cornbread. Their chicken wings were seasoned very well, and the rib tips were tender and were packed with flavor. Unlike Smoke Shack, which is more on the side of boojie barbecue, Ashley's Que tasted like someone was grilling at a BBQ competition with their special set of seasonings. My rib tips were slightly charred, something right up my alley, and their side dishes including macaroni, fried corn on the cob and baked beans definitely delivered. My father, who "wanted to be stuffed on the way back to Illinois," was extremely satisfied with his perch dinner and overall experience.
The service at Ashley's Que was phenomenal, as numerous employees checked to see how we were doing. Granted, Sunday afternoons are slower for most businesses, but they still did an exceptional job serving us. Their cadre of genuine employees and delicious food will certainly have me coming back for more in the future. Rating: 9.5/10
